The Iowa Senate has taken a step toward confirming one of Governor Chet Culver’s four choices for the board that governs Iowa, Iowa State and UNI. Bonnie Campbell of Des Moines is the former Iowa Attorney General who was the Democratic Party’s candidate for governor in 1994.

The Iowa Senate voted 46 to four last night to approve of her service on the Board of Regents. But a Republican senator quickly used a parliamentary move to table the decision, putting it in limbo.

Senate Republicans complain that none of Culver’s four picks for the Regents are from western Iowa. They’ve threatened to vote down at least one of them. Many expected Campbell to be the one to fall. But now the ax may fall on one of the others — Iowa Farm Bureau president Craig Lang; Cedar Rapids businessman Jack Evans; or David Miles, a businessman from West Des Moines.
