The conditions have not always been spring-like but the Drake football team enters the final week of practice before Saturday’s intrasquad game. Drake coach Rob Ash says the weather hurt work on the passing game, but the artificial surface helped save practice. Ash says practice in August is designed to get ready for the season spring practice determines who will play and what they can do

He says there’s a lot of "tinkering around with schemes" where they can work on some different things and see how well they go. Ash says they then refine things in the summer based on what they found in the spring.

Ash says a number of positions will not be decided until the pre-season. He says some guys will go into the summer knowing they have to have a great summer and good fall to win a spot. Ash says there are some spots they are decided in the spring, but a lot remain open. The Bulldogs will open the 2007 season at Illinois State on August 30th.
