Police in Grinnell were called to a gruesome discovery Monday, a human body found at the Grinnell Country Club. Grinnell Police chief Jody Matherly says the body was discovered at about 11:00 A.M. One of the workers at the Grinnell Country Club had uncovered the pool to begin prepping it for the summer and discovered the body.

Matherly says they blocked off the scene and it was clear from the start that the body had been there for some time. Agents came to the scene from the Division of Criminal Investigation, along with their new Mobile Crime Scene Unit. Matherly says the body is so badly decomposed, it isn’t possible to learn much. He says it isn’t even possible to determine the age or sex of the body, which had been in the pool for weeks, if not months.

Matherly says they have no identification, and little more to go on until the investigation proceeds. The Division of Criminal Investigations will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death, and possibly an identification.

There is some speculation that the body might be missing Grinnell College student Paul Schuman-Moore. Chief Matherly says Schuman-Moore’s parents have been contacted, but he refused to speculate on the identity of the body.
