The Briar Cliff baseball team is making a run in the Great Plains Conference race this spring. The Chargers have won seven of their last nine games and stand 12-4 in the league race, good for second place. Coach Boyd Pitkin has a number of players who were part of the team that made it to the NAIA World Series in 2005.

Pitkin says he knew they’d be okay offensively, but he wasn’t sure about pitching. He says they’ve struggled early on with the pitching, but have come along. Pitkin says their strength is still hitting as they can get 10 to 15 hits per game.

Pitkin says pitching and defense usually win games, but you have to have offense too. He says he told his team they have to get the bats going when the pitching is struggling, and so far they have been able to do that.

Pitkin says his team has been playing well despite some adverse conditions the past couple of weeks. They’ve played in sleet, rain, and cold weather. Pitkin says it has been fun to finally get out and play some games in decent weather. The Chargers return to conference action this weekend at Doane of Nebraska.
