This week marks Arbor Day in Iowa. The vice-president of the National Arbor Day Foundation is aptly named — Woody Nelson says people are still working to plant more trees in every state in the union.

The group has nearly a million members nationwide and always hopes for more. They’re just folks who love to enjoy them, talk about them and plant them, and he says "just spreading that word on a grassroots level is very very important to us."

In additino to new features like updated "frost zones," the group’s website offers ten free trees to anybody who joins the foundation. Nelson says right now is a good time to plant them. Arbor Day is always the last Friday in April, and it’s the 27th this year. He says give or take a month, the ground may be thawed out so you can "get out there and dig a hole." He says different soil and climate conditions may direct what local landowners plant.

The Arbor Day Foundation tries to be a resource, compiling information on landscaping, tree care, gifts, kids’ activities and tree forums at the Arbor Day Foundation website .
