A routine check in the Clay County jail turned up a couple enterprising inmates who are now charged with fermenting their own alcohol. Chief Deputy Duane Bates says 40-year-old Juan Humberto Castillo-Alvarez and 40-year-old John Michael Roland Brown are charged with a felony of furnishing an alcoholic beverage to an inmate.

Authorities think the beverage was made by putting bread, sugar, juice and Kool-Aid into a plastic bag and letting it ferment. Alvarez is awaiting trial on second-degree murder and kidnapping charges. Brown has not been able to post bond on drug and theft counts. Both are now awaiting an appearance before a judge on the new charges.
