Human skull found in courthouse attic

June 12, 2007 By admin

A human skull was found in the Poweshiek County Courthouse attic last night.

Sheriff Tom Sheets says a crew spraying foam insulation in the courthouse attic discovered a box containing the remains at about 8:25 p.m. He says the skull appears to be quite old and may have been in the attic for some time.

"There’s rumors of an old murder case. A witness has said she used to work here in the treasurer’s office in the ’50s, and she had heard it was up there," the sheriff says. "We’re thinking it might be from an old murder case, maybe from the ’40s."

Sheets says the attic was roped off and combed like a crime scene. The skull is being transported to the state medical examiner’s office.

The sheriff says the investigation as to where the skull came from, and why it was left in the attic continues.
