Tancredo says stakes at Straw Poll are sizable

July 19, 2007 By admin

Republican presidential candidate Tom Tancredo says he needs to finish in the top five at the Iowa GOP’s Straw Poll next month, or his race probably will be over.

Tancredo’s competing against 10 other candidates who are listed on the Straw Poll ballot.

"This is the hardest campaign I have ever run because you’re not really asking someone to simply go down to the local school or to the church or to the courthouse to cast a vote," Tancredo says. "You’re asking them to get in a car, go someplace as far as four hours away, to spend a good part of the day…(on) a very hot August day to cast a vote for you."

Tancredo plans to spend most of the time between now and the Straw Poll in Iowa, going to coffee shops and elsewhere seeking converts for his campaign.

"I think people are looking somebody who really is who they say they are," Tancredo says. "I’m that guy, that’s for sure, I mean there are no frills here."

Tancredo made his comments Thursday during an appearance on Iowa Public Radio.
