Late run allows Iowa Mennonite to down defending champ Lenox

July 24, 2007 By admin

Darrell Bontrager bounced a single down the left field line to score the eventual game winning run as third rated Iowa Mennonite rallied for a 2-1 victory over defending champion and fifth ranked Lenox 2-1. Bontrager says he was looking for a fastball and adjust to the curve. He wanted to get his step in early and throw his hands through to hit the pitch.

"In that situation, contact does you a lot of good, because the infield is playing in, because your batting average will go up 100 percent, as they say," Bontrager explained.

Lenox scored in the bottom of the first on a double by Tyler Peterson but the Tigers missed on a few opportunities to add to their lead. Lenox coach Steve Westphal says they couldn’t seem to get a bunt over when they needed it.

Lennox closes out the season with a record of 22-8.
