Decorah celebrates its Nordic heritage

July 26, 2007 By admin

The northeast Iowa town of Decorah will hold it’s annual celebration of all things Norwegian this weekend.

The 41st annual Nordic Fest begins with opening ceremonies tonight, and then there are activities planned through Saturday. Nordic Fest Public Relations chair Janet Thompson says there’s traditional Norwegian music and dancing, a parade, and plenty of food.

One of the highlights is the Lutefisk eating contest at 2:30 on Saturday. Thompson says participants must be brave, "lutefisk is a much loved or hated delicacy…it’s cod soaked in lye." There also a contest dating back to the Viking ages, the Nordic Fest "rock throw." More information about all the activities at Nordic Fest in Decorah can be found  at www.nordicfest.com .
