Edwards says fence along entire southern border "crazy"

July 27, 2007 By admin

Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards says building a fence all along the southern border of the U.S. is "crazy." Edwards says there are some "isolated places" where a fence might do some good.

During a campaign appearance in Atlantic, Edwards told the crowd there are other ways to attack the problem."We should be much tougher on employers who are knowingly violating the law," Edwards said, to loud applause.

Another idea, which Edwards acknowledged would not be as popular, is a path to "earned" citizenship. "I think if you came here illegally, you ought to pay a fine in recognition that you came here illegally and I think you should learn to speak English," Edwards said, again drawing loud applause from the audience.

About 100 people attended the Edwards event in Atlantic.
