Gasoline prices in Iowa have dropped a whopping 44-cents a gallon in the past month. Rose White, spokeswoman for Triple-A-Iowa, says the statewide average for a gallon of self-service unleaded gas cost three-22 in mid-July. Now, the price is down to $2.78.

White says, "Commodity prices this past week for crude oil and processed fuel were down and we hope that will continue." White says the last big road trip holiday of summer is just around the corner, which is expected to boost demand for gas and could mean another spike in pump prices.

White says "It’s very difficult to say if prices will be up for the Labor Day holiday weekend. If we look at what’s happened in the commodity price market this week, it shows a nice continuing downturn in prices, but as we’ve learned, anything can set off a reversal of that downward trend."

Iowa’s current average for a gallon of self-serve gas is $2.78 — two cents higher than the national average. The state’s most expensive gas is selling in Cedar Rapids, averaging $2.86 a gallon, while the cheapest gas is in Des Moines at $2.63.
