District action gets underway in high school football

September 14, 2007 By admin

The Class A district four race begins with three of the eight teams ranked in the top ten and two of them meet tonight as eighth ranked Belmond-Klemme hosts number four Algona Garrigan.

Belmond-Klemme coach Darwin Christensen says Garrigan is big and well coached. He says his team will need to be ready for a physical contest from the opening whistle.

Both teams are 2-0 as is second rated West Hancock. The Eagles are at home against Graettinger-Terrill. West Hancock coach Bob Sanger says Belmond-Klemme is a good football school that has done well over the years and are very capable.

A pair of unbeatens meet to open the class 3A district six race as fourth rated Keokuk visits Mount Pleasant. Keokuk is led by quarterback James Vandenberg, who has 600 yards of passing and 11 touchdowns already this season. Coach Jason Campbell says the Chiefs are more than just a one man team, as he says the runningbacks have to do a variety of things from catching the ball to pass protecting.

Mount pleasant has won a pair of close games and coach Bob Jensen hopes this one is close as well. He says it’s district football time now and he looks for the team to respond.
