A southeast Iowa town set up by followers of the Transcendental Meditation movement has suffered a set-back in its attempts to dramatically expand its borders. The Jefferson County Board of Supervisors passed a resolution in opposition to the annexation plans of Maharishi Vedic City.

The board says the city should not expand until they provide municipal services to their current residents. The Vedic City City Council approved two voluntary annexations covering over 80-acres at a recent meeting. The supervisors passed a resolution Monday seeking a moratorium on additional annexation in the overlapping two-mile zones between Maharishi Vedic City and the City of Fairfield until services are provided.

The city was established six years ago, and according to Supervisor Steve Burgmeier has failed to complete projects such as public streets and a volunteer fire department. About 420 people reside in Vedic City.
