Iowa’s first big snowfall of the season is causing some problems on one of the busiest travel days of the year. Many roads from southwest through northeast Iowa are coated with a mix of snow and ice. Towing bans are in place for portions of I-80, I-35, and other roads.

National Weather Service meteorologist Jeff Johnson says most of the state will move out of the state tonight. He expects storm accumulations of two to five inches. One reason traveling has been a problem is the 20 to 25 mile per hour winds.

"You couple that with the snow, you’re going to drop your visibilities," Johnson says, "and occasionally even create white out conditions out in the open areas." Johnson suggests postponing any travel plans to tomorrow. He says the storm system will be out of the state by tomorrow, making room for dry weather and high temperatures in the 30s.

The Iowa Department of Transportation updates the state’s road condition on-line at its  Road Conditions website .
