A motorist from Alabama was killed Wednesday in southwest Iowa’s Fremont County, after a pickup went out of control and struck the individual who was walking near the shoulder of the interstate just north of the Iowa-Missouri line.

The State Patrol says the accident happened at around 3:45 p.m., when a pickup driven by 17-year-old Zachary Spears, of Watson, Missouri, went out of control on a northbound Interstate 29 bridge. The pickup spun around into the east ditch and struck a pedestrian who was walking up the embankment from their vehicle that had gone into the same ditch, moments earlier.

The impact of the pickup threw the pedestrian back into the ditch. The name of the victim was being withheld pending notification of relatives. Troopers say Spears was not injured and the accident remains under investigation.
