The Iowa Hawkeyes put up more of a fight in the second half but it was not enough as they fell to Wake Forest 56-47 in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The Hawks had more turnovers than baskets. They made just 19-of-50 shots and turned the ball over 23 times.
Freshman forward Jarryd Cole was one of the bright spots as he finished with a team high 14 points and seven rebounds. Cole says they didn’t compete early in the game and that is crucial in this type of game.
Iowa coach Todd Lickliter says he was proud of the way the Hawkeyes fought back in the second half. Lickliter says he doesn’t believe in moral victories, but says you need to talk about the positives you can find and do more of it. He says they also need to correct the negatives, but says he can’t fault the team’s effort in the second half.
Lickliter says the Hawks need to combine good effort with good focus. He says when you work hard without a real system, it’s like a guy who drives a bus all day and gets on the intercom and says, "the good news is we’re making great time, the bad news is we’re lost." Lickliter says that’s what happens when you just work hard, you want to work hard with a purpose. Iowa is 4-3.
