School bus driver charged with drunk driving

December 3, 2007 By admin

A school bus driver faces drunk driving charges in northeast Iowa. A Waukon man, who drove a middle school girls’ basketball team to New Hampton Friday, was arrested for OWI. The New Hampton Police Department says they were called to New Hampton Middle School shortly after seven P.M. in reference to a possible intoxicated bus driver.

Authorities say 75-year-old Virgil Opfer was taken into custody after failing standarized field sobriety tests. He was charged with first offense operating while intoxicated and open container. He was released after posting bond Saturday morning. Arrangements were made to get the students and staff back to Waukon.
