Thompson swipe at Huckabee over intelligence report on Iran

December 7, 2007 By O. Kay Henderson

Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson is questioning competitor Mike Huckabee who earlier this week told reporters he hadn’t heard about the latest federal report which concluded that Iran had suspended its nuclear weapons program in 2003. Thompson says it’s “very surprising” that Huckabee didn’t know about the latest National Intelligence Estimate on Iran.

During a stop earlier today in Davenport, Thompson expressed grave concern about Iran’s hostile intentions. “Israel’s the ‘Little Satan.’ We’re the ‘Great Satan,'” Thompson said. “Countries like Iran have been killing us for a long, long time through terrorist organizations like Hezbollah and Hamas and others.”

Thompson expressed skepticism about the report which concludes Iran is not pursuing nuclear weapons and Thompson called Iran one of the gravest threats to the U.S. “It’s not going to go away my friends. We’ve got to be strong. We’ve got to be united,” Thompson said. “We’ve got to be tough. We’ve got to do what’s necessary to protect this country.”

Later this evening in Des Moines, Thompson plans to visit with Iowa Farm Bureau members who are attending the organization’s annual meeting.
