Voters braved the bad weather and approved one bond issue and defeated another in Northeast Iowa. Voters approved a 35-million dollar bond issue for the Northeast Iowa Community College, braving slick, snow covered streets Tuesday in 12 northeast Iowa counties.

The unofficial vote tally was 11,245 "yes" votes to 6,666 no votes or 62.7% approval. The measure needed 60%approval to pass. The money will be used to upgrade the 40-year-old facilities on the N-I-C-C’s Calmar and Peosta campuses. A similar measure had failed in February.

The slippery roads also did not deter votes in the Wapsie Valley School District from coming out to defeat a proposal to build two new elementary schools in Fairbank and Readlyn. The 7.9 million dollar measure was rejected by an unofficial vote total of 527 "yes" votes, to 617 "no" votes, or only 46% approval. A second measure asking if the district should be authorized to levy a tax to pay for the bond was also defeated.
