Marshalltown woman found incompetent to stand trial in toilet paper theft

December 14, 2007 By admin

The Marshalltown woman caught stealing toilet paper from the Marshall County Courthouse will not be going to trial. Last June, 38-year-old Suzanne Butts of Marshalltown was arrested after a courthouse employee saw Butts taking three rolls of toilet paper from a supply closet.

Now, she has been declared incompetent to stand trial. Judge Kim Riley issued a ruling after Butts was evaluated by a psychiatrist. Judge Riley says Butts could still face charges if her mental condition improves. Butts could have faced up to two years in prison for the toilet paper theft.

Marshalltown police say they don’t know why Butts was at the courthouse because she didn’t work there.
