There is some state assistance available for Iowans in the counties declared disaster areas after the recent snow and ice storms. Bret Voorhees of Iowa’s Emergency Management Division, says the Iowa Individual Assistance Program is the place to turn.

Voorhees says the program is for the most needy Iowans, for a family of four for example, there’s an income threshold of about 26-thousand dollars. Voorhees says the program will help provide assistance if you have to hook your electricity back up, or had to stay in a hotel. Voorhees says the program will not pay for generators. The program is relatively new.

Voorhees says the program was establish in an emergency situation during the first ice storms in February and March, and now is permanent. Application forms are available at any county office of the Iowa Department of Human Services or any county emergency management office. The DHS has set up a toll free hotline at: 866-434-4692 for questions.
