Buoyed by new poll, McCain returns for final hour campaigning

January 2, 2008 By admin

Just hours to go ’til the doors open Thursday night for Iowa’s Caucuses. Buoyed by the Des Moines Register Iowa Poll which showed him vaulting into third place, Republican John McCain has returned to campaign in Iowa today and tomorrow.

But competitor Mike Huckabee will board a plane today and fly west — to be a guest on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. On New Year’s Day, Huckabee campaigned with Chuck Norris, the martial arts star who had his own “Walker: Texas Ranger” TV show. Norris, as you may know, has endorsed Huckabee and Norris is pleased Huckabee decided not to run an attack ad Huckabee had prepared to strike out at rival Mitt Romney.

“Truthfully, I hate the negative campaigning. I’m a very positive individual,” Norris said. “The thing is, when you have to run a negative campaign that means you don’t have much positive to say.” Huckabee and Norris visited with bloggers yesterday and one of the bloggers asked Norris how much he wanted to “roundhouse kick” Mitt Romney.

“Now, now,” Huckabee immediately chided. Norris quickly added a “no” to that himself. “I don’t roundhouse kick. I choke,” Norris said, drawing laughter. “…I’d just like to choke those guys out.” Today, all the rest of the major candidates are canvassing the state — along with their supporters — aiming to boost turn-out on Caucus night.
