One dead, two injured in crash near Avoca

January 16, 2008 By admin

One person died and two others were injured in a two vehicle crash Tuesday evening just north of Avoca in western Iowa. According to Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s officials, 85 year old Wayne Ranniger of Manning was killed when the 1998 Cadillac he was driving was struck by a 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe, driven by 57-year-old David Allen of Oakland.

Authorities says the accident happened just after 6:30 P.M., when Ranniger pulled out from the intersection of the Interstate 80 exit ramp to Highway 59 and his car was hit broadside by the SUV. Ranniger was pronounced dead at the scene. His wife, who was a passenger in the car, was taken by helicopter to an Omaha hospital.

Officials say her injuries did not appear to be life-threatening. Allen was taken by family members to the hospital in Harlan, where he was treated for minor injuries. The accident remains under investigation.
