Dubuque woman falls into storm sewer

February 8, 2008 By admin

A Dubuque woman was hospitalized Thursday after she fell into a storm sewer while delivering newspapers.  Fifty-seven year old Carol Bemis was delivering the Dubuque Telegraph Herald when she stepped over a snowdrift between the street and sidewalk.

The snow gave way and she slipped into a storm drain. Bemis was trapped for nearly an hour. Only her head was visible from the street and a passer-by found her and called for help. Bemis was treated for hypothermia. A city engineer says the storm drain is an older model. It has an opening nearly eight inches tall and four feet wide.
