The host of a nationally-televised interior design show is in Des Moines today to offer Iowans tips on making big changes in their homes for very little money. Lee Snijders, of H-G-T-V’s "Design on a Dime," says the whole concept of his show, and his appearance in Iowa, is to demonstrate how easy it is to "flip" a room, and it won’t cost a fortune.

He says paint is the least expensive way to change a space but it can also be the most expensive way if you don’t pick the right color the first time. Snijders says picking a color can be a daunting task for people who don’t think they have the eye for it, but he says it’s not rocket science. First, he says to single out one item in the room that’ll be your focus or "inspiration" piece.

He says to take the inspiration piece, be it an area rug, a piece of art or a duvet cover in the bedroom, and pick the least dominant color — the one that doesn’t stand out — and make that your wall color. All or the other colors are your accessory colors and your secondary colors — it’s that easy. Snijders says you shouldn’t be afraid to experiment.

He says the fastest way to "warm up" a space is to add plants, placing them in the corners or on top of a china hutch or entertainment center. Snijders also suggests using real plants down low and putting the same plant, in silk, up above and people will assume they’re all real. Snijders is making several appearances at the show in Des Moines.
