Another blast of winter is in store for much of Iowa for the next few days. National Weather Service meteorologist Mindy Albrecht says freezing rain and snow is moving into central Iowa this afternoon. The wintery mix forced many schools in northern Iowa to dismiss early today.

Albrecht says pretty much all of central Iowa, from Council Bluffs to Des Moines to Cedar Rapids, will receive patchy freezing drizzle mixed with snow. The precipitation will spread into southern Iowa this evening. An arctic blast is also covering the state.

Albrecht says, "We should see lows anywhere from minus-10 to minus-15 below across northern Iowa and right around zero to five-below across southern Iowa, so definitely another cold night on tap." Wind chill readings overnight are expected at 20 below zero.

Friday’s high temperatures across most of the state will only be in the single digits. Temperatures should warm up a bit on Saturday and Sunday with highs in the 20s to near 30.
