Jury finds Marshalltown man guilty of murder

February 15, 2008 By admin

A jury is Linn County Thursday found a Marshalltown man guilty in a fatal shooting. Twenty-two year old Luis Guzman Perez was convicted of second-degree murder in the October 15, 2006 shooting death of Joshua Wohlman of Garwin.

The case was moved to Linn County because of pre-trial publicity. Prosecutors tried to convince jurors to convict Perez of first-degree murder. They said Perez shot Wohlman in the head after the two fought at a party in rural Tama County. Defense attorneys claimed the shooting was not intentional…that the gun went off accidently as Perez was tackled to the ground.

They said Perez should be found guilty of involuntary manslaughter. Sentencing is set for April 11. Perez faces up to 50 years in prison.
