A fire damaged a day care center in central Iowa this morning. The blaze was reported at 4:45 a.m. at the Country Kids Club in Van Meter. No one was in the facility at the time. Van Meter Fire Chief Dave Van Genderen says the fire started in the top level of the one-and-a-half story structure.

"We actually knocked the fire down fairly quick but it had been going for a while. There’s quite a bit of heat damage throughout the building, lots of smoke damage and of course water damage from fighting the fire," Van Genderen said.

An official cause for the fire has not been determined, but it appears to be accidental in nature."I believe it’s electrical at this point," Van Genderen said. Approximately 60 children attend the day care center.
