Action at the girls' state tournament in Des Moines In its first ever appearance at the tournament Marion came away with a victory. The Indians used a smothering defense and a 31-17 rebounding advantage to roll past Spencer 47-31.

Marion coach Sherryl Paige says all season long they’ve talked about defense, and today they played tough defense and rebounded well.

Paige says it was a complete effort. Paige says they’ve been though a lot of struggles and have been up and down, but today they came out and weren’t afraid, and played hard and "just played ball."

Spencer coach Don Martindale says his team was beaten in every phase, as they couldn’t get a loose ball, couldn’t make a free throw, couldn’t make a three point shot. He says nothing went their way, but says a lot of the credit goes to Marion. Martindale says they certainly didn’t play their A game.
