Defending champion falls in Class 3A

February 27, 2008 By admin

There will be a new champion in class 3A. Sioux City Heelan outscored defending champ Cedar Rapids Xavier 13-1 in the second quarter enroute to a 47-31 win. Senior guard Michelle Lund had 14 points and six assists for Heelan.

She says the Crusaders were not expecting a lopsided game, as she says Xavier plays in a very tough conference. Lund says they came out and focused on stopping the post game.

Xavier coach Tom Lilly says Heelan dominated the game in all phases and played poised, and at 23-2, he says they are one of the teams to beat. The Saints end the season with a record of 17-8.

Amanda Zimmerman scored 21 points as Ballard of Huxley held off upset minded Dallas-Center Grimes 58-45. It was the Bombers third victory over the Fillies this season. Zimmerman says its hard beating a team three times and she says they handled the challenge well. Lauran Hansen led Dallas Center-Grimes with 12 points.

In the class 3A quarterfinal round, Haley Brillhart had 19 points as top ranked Pella downed Williamsburg 60-39. The Dutch broke the game open in the third quarter by outscoring the Raiders 20-7. Brillhart says they are a second half team and knew they could win if they came out and attacked.

Pella is 24-1. MacKenzie Westcott led Williamsburg with 18 points. The Raiders close the season 21-4.

In its first ever appearance at the tournament Marion came away with a victory. The Indians used a smothering defense and a 31-17 rebounding advantage to roll past Spencer 47-31.
