Waterloo teen shot during home break-in

March 18, 2008 By admin

A Waterloo teenager is hospitalized after a shooting in the city early today. The shooting occurred during an apparent break-in at an apartment. Police were called to a residential housing complex around 5 a-m on the report of a burglary in progress.

Authorities say some unidentified intruders — one armed with a handgun — entered the apartment while the residents were sleeping. The break-in woke 15-year-old Derrick Cole, who then struggled with the burglars. Police say multiple shots were fired during the struggle, and one bullet struck Cole in the back. Cole was rushed to a local hospital for treatment. His condition isn’t being released.

Police are trying to find the suspects after they fled the scene. The burglary and shooting remain under investigation.
