Man drives into floodwater after warning sign moved

March 24, 2008 By admin

Someone apparently removed "Road Closed" signs from a flooded highway in Johnson County near Swisher on Sunday, and a man drove his pickup truck into a wall of water. The truck stalled and was washed into a ditch beside the Iowa River.

John Rundall, Swisher’s assistant fire chief, says the man was able to call 9-1-1 using his cell phone. Rundall says, "He was a bit upset. It’s my understanding that he does not know how to swim. Dispatch did relay that to us so, he was visibly upset by the time we got to him."

The water had gotten as high as the man’s neck before fire crews were able to rescue him — and his dog — using a paramedic’s backboard as a ramp. Neither were hurt. Eight eastern Iowa counties are under flood warnings this morning, for cities including Davenport, Iowa City and Clinton.
