Gene Chizik (file photo) Iowa State football coach Gene Chizik has not ruled out using two quarterbacks next season. A pair of sophomores are battling for the job during spring drills.

Phillip Bates caught five passes as a receiver in 2007 and Austen Arnaud played in six games a year ago as the backup to Bret Meyer.

Chizik says Arnaud doesn’t have a leg up, but when it comes to confidence, Arnaud has more on the field time and success at quarterback. Chizik says spring drills will not determine who the starter is. He says there will be someone they have a great idea about by the end of spring, but Chizik says that will carry over to the fall and "there’s nothing wrong with playing two."

This is Chizik’s second spring as head coach and says having a year under his belt is a plus. He says he feels more like a football coach this year, as the head job can make you feel like an administrator much of the time. Chizik says there is a much different feeling this spring from the coaches and the players.

Chizik says there’s a change in the way they’re executing things because they can look at film of the way they executed things last year and can show players what they did wrong.

ISU’s spring game is April 19th.
