Authorities in western Iowa’s Cass County say several malnourished animals were rescued from a farm near Atlantic over the weekend. Cass County Sheriff’s officials say they received a tip regarding possible animal neglect and conducted a search east of Atlantic.

When deputies arrived at around 1 p.m., they found numerous dead animals on the property. Officials managed to save seven malnourished horses, seven dogs, 35 goats, nine ducks and one chicken. The animals — all in poor condition — were taken to local veterinarians for proper care. One horse was found dead horse in a pasture, while another horse had to be put down put a veterinarian.

Officials say there was feed available to the animals, but they simply couldn’t get to it, and several dogs were penned up without food or water. The animals’ owners were not identified, and they have not yet officially been charged with a crime. The matter has been turned over to the Cass County Attorney’s office for further review.
