Iowa football coach Kirk Ferentz says Jake Christensen remains the number one quarterback as the Hawkeyes get set to close out spring practice with a scrimmage on Saturday. Christensen is competing with Marvin McNutt and Rich Stanzi for the starting job.

Ferentz says Christensen has the experience advantage, although all three quarterbacks have played better in the spring. He says they won’t make a decision on a starter until midway through August. If the Hawkeyes hope to make strides next season they will need improvement from an offense that struggled to produce in 2007.

Ferentz says a number of players have missed time this spring due to injury so it has been difficult to get an accurate read. He says they haven’t had the consistency of having everyone together, and he believes they will be better in the fall. Ferentz says the coaches have had a chance to evaluate all three quarterbacks this spring, and have been working all the guys with all the groups.
