The Floyd County Sheriff is warning residents of a telephone scam. Someone is calling area residents and telling them that their utilities will be disconnected if they do not pay immediately. The caller states that they are working for the local utility company which provides service to the area, and the victim has to pay their bill immediately with a credit card or be disconnected.

In some instances the caller asks for the victim’s birthdate and social security number. The sheriff notes that one person fell victim to the scam and gave out their credit card number, and later there was a transaction on their car, completed in Georgia. Anyone receiving such a call should hang up and notify local law enforcement.
