Police in Des Moines have identified the suspect in a fatal weekend shooting, but no charges have been filed.

Police were called to an apartment near the Drake University campus at 8:30 Sunday morning. Twenty-six-year-old Steve Gibbs told the dispatcher and officers that arrived on the scene that he accidentally shot and killed his girlfriend, 20-year-old Latasha Thomas.

An unidentified man, who was in town for the Drake Relays and was staying with Gibbs and Thomas, told police Gibbs had bought a gun "on the streets" after they had become involved in an altercation with a group of people at a nightclub. According to a police report, Gibbs thought he saw a car association with the same group of people outside his apartment.

The witness told police he heard a bang and found Gibbs crying, kneeling down over Thomas. Detectives are now waiting for autopsy results. Gibbs was released Sunday after nearly eight hours of questioning.
