Fire destroyed a building on the grounds of a large employer in northeast Iowa Monday night. The fire was reported at 6:15 p.m. in a building owned by Bertch Cabinet Manufacturing in Waterloo. There were no reports of any injuries.

The building covered 8,000 square feet. Company officials say the fire likely started with the combustion of saw dust. The building was used for the storage of sawdust, which was then loaded in semi-trailers for removal and disposal. It took fire crews nearly an hour to douse the flames.

Bertch Manufacturing is one of Waterloo’s largest employers. The company’s complex covers 600,000 square feet.
