Two Iowa schools will meet in the opening round of the NAIA Region III softball tournament which starts on Wednesday in Sioux City. Morningside is the second seed in the tournament and at 37-10 takes on seventh seeded Northwestern.

The Red Raiders are 27-19 and coach Melanie Mason says her young team has played its best at the end of the season. She says young players don’t usually hit very well to start and they found that, but have started to learn how to hit better.

Mason says a victory in the opening round would be a great start for her team which has dropped two of three games to Morningside this year. She says the first game is big as Morningside is playing really well right now. Dickinson State of North Dakota is the top seed.
