One person was killed, two injured, when a semi crushed a compact car Monday afternoon in southwest Iowa’s Adams County. An SUV and a Honda Civic were stopped in the construction zone on Highway 34 headed westbound, when a semi driven by 41-year-old Donald Evans, of Ivanhoe, Minnesota, failed to slow down and hit the Civic before rolling on top of it.

The Civic, pinned underneath the semi, rolled forward and collided with the rear of the SUV, which then went into the north ditch. The driver of the Civic, 52-year-old Michael McDonald, of Emerson was killed in the crash. The driver of the SUV, 58-year-old Kathleen Cheese, and her passenger, 60-year-old Michael Cheese, both Ellston, were injured and taken to the Corning Hospital.

The accident closed Highway 34 for a time, while crews worked to clean-up the site of the crash and an investigation was conducted. No charges have been filed thus far.
