New Hampton man charged with murder following weekend fight

May 19, 2008 By admin

A New Hampton man is jailed in the weekend slaying of a Charles City man at a Charles City bar. Thirty-two-year-old Richard Cortez is charged with first-degree murder in the death of 28-year-old Kenyon Armstrong and faces two counts of attempted murder after two others victims were injured in the incident.

Charles City police say they were called to Tori’s Bar at 700 Riverside shortly after 1:20 Saturday morning on the report of a large fight. On arrival, officers say they discovered Armstrong, 23-year-old Cyrus Riley, and an unidentified juvenile victim as victims of the fight.

All three were taken to Floyd County Memorial Hospital, where Armstrong was pronounced dead on arrival. Riley’s condition has not been made available, and authorities are withholding the identity of the juvenile involved. Cortez was later arrested and taken to the Floyd County Jail. If convicted of first-degree murder, Cortez would face a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the opportunity of parole.
