Wedding part of new Drake coach’s busy first month

May 21, 2008 By admin

A whirlwind month continues for new Drake basketball coach Mark Phelps. Since taking the job in April, Phelps has had to relocate, hire a staff and get acquainted with the current members of the team. With all that out of the way he can now concentrate on his wedding. That will take place this Saturday on Grand Cayman Island.

Phelps says in four weeks they have been able to get to Des Moines permanently, hire a staff and get to know players. He has only been on the job for a short time but he has been impressed with what he has seen.

Phelps says the thing that has been a surprise is the people of Des Moines and the interest in basketball. He says he knew the MVC as a good conference, but the interest in Drake basketball is "off the charts."

Phelps expects all the current members of the team to return and his recruiting efforts are focused on 2009.

Phelps has landed one player since taking the job. 5-11 guard Ryan Wedel is transferring to Drake after spending his first two seasons at Arkansas State.
