Minnesota, Iowa health officials discussing lead in venison

June 4, 2008 By admin

Wildlife, public health and food safety experts from Iowa are in Minnesota today  to discuss tainted deer meat. Today’s meeting with officials from Iowa and four other midwest states was prompted by the finding of lead fragments in venison donated by hunters last fall to food shelves in Minnesota and North Dakota.

No illnesses were linked to the venison’s consumption, but officials want to err on the side of caution. Each state will review the status of and identify potential guidelines for their venison donation programs.
