A business that was flooded in Des Moines is helping neighbors rebuild. It turns out, the business has a lot of expertise in that area. Darolyn Link is an Americorps volunteer that works at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore.

The store sells donated building materials to raise money for Habitat’s new home projects. Now, like the rest of the Birdland neighborhood, they rely on sunlight and generators to illuminate their clean up efforts. "We’ve thrown out a lot," Link says, "like flooring, dry wall, lights, miscellaneous paint stuff and some appliances."

Link says after cleaning up their own mess, Habitat for Humanity wants to turn around and help their

neighbors. "We tentatively have a plan…I think we’re going to see if we can help these people in the Birdland area refurbish and rebuild," Link said. "We want to help the community that we’re in."

The Habitat for Humanity ReStore was flooded on June 14, along with other homes and businesses, when a levee broke in the neighborhood on Des Moines’ north side. Link says the store could reopen on Monday.
