Play continues at the state softball tournament

Amanda Hanson’s run scoring single in the bottom of the fifth snapped a 2-2 tie as fifth ranked and defending champion Highland downed fourth ranked Southeast Webster 4-2 in the 1A opener.

Hanson’s hit came right after Southeast Webster rallied to tie the game. The teams combined for nine errors and there was not earned run for either team.

Kelly Johnson’s bunt single scored Karina Overgaard all the way from second base as eighth rated Newell-Fonda edged Preston 1-0. Newell-Fonda coach Dick Jungers says the Mustangs took advantage of one of their few opportunities. Ashley

Allen tossed a one-hitter as second rated Martensdale-St. Marys beat Fremont-Mills 4-0. The Blue Devils came away with a win in their first game ever at the state tournament.

Allen says she gets even more confident on the mound when she gets a lead. Alburnett got by third-rated Woodbury Central 2-1.

 In class 2A, defending champion Solon scored two runs in the first enroute to a 5-1 win over Turkey Valley and Mid-Prairie blanked Pleasantville 2-0.
