Akron-Westfield’s Kayla Smith lost her bid for a no-hitter but she got what she really wanted and that’s a win. Smith held Emmetsburg without a hit until Morgan Vlasman legged out an infield single with two outs in the seventh but the Westerners went on to claim a 4-0 win in a 2A quarterfinal round game.

Smith struck out 14 E-Hawks as she claimed her 31st win of the season.

Sammy Snygg tossed a three hitter and struck out 11 as second rated North Polk cruised past Des Moines Christian 6-0. Snygg opened the scoring with a solo homer to left to open the third and the Comets grabbed control by scoring three times in the frame. North Polk coach Rick Dillinger says scoring first is always a key.

In the class 3A opening round, Paige Sheeder was three-for-three as sixth rated Davenport Assumption got by Adel ADM 2-1.
The Knights improve to 30-11.


Sophomore pitcher Morgan Louck tossed a two-hitter and slammed a two run homer as seventh rated Fort Madison blanked number four Carlisle 7-0.
Louck says she felt confident on the mound.
