Johnston finishes season a perfect 40-0

July 28, 2008 By admin

The boys basball tournament wrapped up over the weekend. Johnston finished up the summer season Saturday with a 6-2 victory over Marshalltown in the Class 4-A championship game at Principal Park.

The Dragons, who were the top seed in the Radio Iowa High School baseball poll finished a perfect 40-0, becoming the first Class 4-A team to be undefeated state champion since the tournament expanded to four classes in 1981. The last Class 4-A-sized team to finish undefeated was Council Bluffs Jefferson, which was 18-0 in the one-class 1962 tournament.

The Johnston win also kept the title in central Iowa metro league, as a member of that league has won the title every year since 1996. The state title was the final game for Johnston coach Randy Wee, who is resigning as coach to work on a government program dealing with diet and exercise. Wee ends up with a 173-105 mark in in seven seasons at Johnston.

In class 3A Centerville beat Harlan 1-0, in 2A Davenport Assumption downed Cherokee 4-2, in class 1A North Sentral Kossuth downed Don Bosco 6-1.
