Governor "welcomes" upcoming Pelosi visit

August 25, 2008 By admin

Governor Chet Culver says he welcomes House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s upcoming visit to Iowa. Republicans have been hammering Pelosi and other Democrats after she adjourned the U.S. House in late July without approving a federal flood relief package for Iowa.

Culver, a Democrat, says he had "repeatedly" asked Pelosi to visit Iowa. "We can show her, literally, by taking her into Cedar Rapids, the extent of the destruction…so the timing of her visit couldn’t be better," Culver says.

According to Culver, Iowa needs a billion dollars just to deal with the damage and destruction of homes. Culver says so far, the Department of Housing and Urban Development has forwarded $85 million to Iowa in grant money for housing.
