A Des Moines woman who was flooded out of her home says all the talk about disaster aid is fine, but many Iowans need action. Janet Green told House Speaker Nancy Pelosi Monday that the people who have been flooded out in her neighborhood at getting to the end of their rope when it comes to waiting for disaster aid.

Pelosi told state and local officials that the money will be coming very soon, but Green says it can’t come soon enough. Green says it’s great that Pelosi showed the commitment of Congress to help, but she says the message still is to speed things up. "I know that government moves slowly and I’m not sure that there’s really anything today that’s different, that it’s gonna move any faster, but as least she’s here to see… what the situation is and to understand the need for the quick resolution," Green says.

Pelosi also talked about working to make changes to cut through the red tape in the future. Green doesn’t expect any quick changes. Green believes the process of changing the system will take a long time too and says she didn’t hear anything "exciting and new" that shows the system will be vastly different a year from now. "We just have to wait to see what quickly means, I guess," Green says.

Green says while the politicians talk about sending aid to help flood victims, those victims face the same questions every day. She says they are constantly wondering if they will get to rebuild their home, will they stay in their home and will they get the money to rebuild. Green says while politicians may think six or four weeks is a great turnaround to get something done, those weeks are all days that flood victims don’t know if they will stay or be moving from their home.

Green told Pelosi she’s been living in a small trailer with her husband and daughter since the flooding. She says they will finally get to move out and into a new home on the southside of Des Moines soon.
